Achilles Tendinitis

What is Achilles Tendinitis?
Achilles tendinitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon located at the back of the leg. The Achilles tendon is a band of connective tissue that connects the calf to the calcaneus (heel bone of the foot). The calf muscle group are made of two muscles called the gastrocnemius and soleus. They unite toward the heel and form the Achilles tendon. This tendon is the largest and strongest tendon in the body and transmits power to the heel and foot when the calf flexes. It is crucial for walking, running, and jumping.
What Causes Achilles Tendinitis?
Achilles tendinitis is caused by repetitive motion or intense training to the calf muscles. It is common in sports that involves running, jumping, and squatting. The overuse causes inflammation and pain to the tendon.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
Pain at the back of the leg
Pain aggravated by physical activity such as running and jumping
How is Achilles Tendinitis Diagnosed?
Achilles tendinitis is diagnosed with a thorough medical history, physical examination, and orthopedic testing.
What are the Treatment Options?
Achilles tendinitis can be treated by rest or modifying activities. If untreated, the Achilles tendon can become weak and eventually tear (Achilles rupture).
Chiropractic manipulation and mobilization
Soft tissue therapies
Gua-sha
Cupping
E-stim
Ultrasound
Ergonomic/postural counseling
Rehabilitative exercises
Other treatments that patients may seek (not provided at Ngan Chiropractic) include NSAID medication, PRP injections, and surgery if severe.
